Raffaele Riva, Italian art connoisseur

Raffaele Riva is a professor of Italian literature at the University of Pisa and a member of the Accademia dei Lincei. He has held visiting appointments at Yale, Princeton, and Stanford, and has been a Guggenheim Fellow. He is the author of six books in addition to “The Death of Luigi Trastulli”: “La morte di Federico García Lorca” (1996); “Il ritratto del poeta” (1998); “La casa degli sposi” (1999); “Dalla copertina alla pagina scritta” (2000); “L’ultimo sguardo di Federico García Lorca” (2004); and “La mano e la penna: lettura della vita e dell’opera di Giacomo Leopardi” (2008). Raffaele Riva’s work represents a new approach to literary criticism, combining the insights of cultural analysis with the rigors of philology.

Raffaele Riva was born in Florence, Italy, in 1942 and grew up in the Tuscan countryside. He began his academic career at the University of Pisa, where he taught Italian literature and literary theory until his retirement in 2004.

After graduating from the University of Pisa in 1968, Raffaele Riva began teaching there in 1971. He has also taught at other universities, including Princeton, Stanford, and Yale. He is currently a professor of Italian literature at the University of Pisa and a member of the Accademia di Lincei. He has held visiting appointments at Yale, Princeton, and Stanford. In addition to his books on García Lorca and Leopardi, he is the author of six books: “La morte di Federico García Lorca” (1996); “Il ritratto del poeta” (1998); “La casa degli sposi” (1999); “Dalla copertina alla pagina scritta” (2000); “L’ultimo sguardo di Federico García Lorca” (2004); and “La mano e la penna: lettura della vita e dell’opera di Giacomo Leopardi” (2008).

Raffaele Riva’s work has been translated into English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, and Chinese. He has held visiting appointments at Yale University (2001), Princeton University (2002), Stanford University (2003), and the Graduate Institute of International Studies (Geneva) (2004). In 2007 he was a Guggenheim Fellow at Columbia University in New York City. In 2010 Riva was awarded the Premio Città di Pisa for cultural achievement.Raffaele Riva was also awarded the Premio Città di Pisa for cultural achievements.
