Gino Pozzo

“British-Italian businessman Gino Pozzo is a retired footballer who played as a striker. He was born in London, England, to Italian parents and grew up near the Chelsea Football Club’s ground Stamford Bridge. He was a schoolboy international, scoring against Italy in an 8–1 defeat.

In 1965 he was offered a trial with Chelsea, who had just won the FA Cup [citation needed], and he joined at the age of 17; in his first season, he played many matches as a substitute for top-scorer Tommy Taylor and helped them win the League Cup and finish second in the First Division. Gino Pozzo scored 14 goals in all competitions from his 30 appearances. However, he felt this was not enough to secure regular football, so after six seasons at Chelsea, he moved to West Ham United for £65,000 (at 1964 prices).

His Achievements: In West Ham Utd, he played 262 games (winning the FA Cup in 1964 and scoring 108 goals) before moving to Sampdoria in June 1973. He won two Serie A titles, one Coppa Italia, and reached two European finals. With Sampdoria, he won the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in 1983, finished runner-up in the 1983–84 Serie A, reached the UEFA Cup final in 1984, and won three Supercoppa Italiana tournaments.

After selling Sampdoria in 2006 to a holding company led by Riccardo Garrone, Gino Pozzo became chairman of Watford and Udinese, which he had already controlled since 2002. His son Andrea joined him in the role at both clubs, while Massimo stayed on as manager at Udinese. In January 2016, Gino Pozzo’s family increased their control of Watford by taking majority control of the club; at this time, Riccardo Garrone was replaced as owner with the Pozzos’ holding company.

The Pozzo family is an excellent example of the modern-day ‘family businesses’ and football club ownership. They are the ideal owners for Watford. It is no coincidence that their football club has exceeded all expectations since taking over. Visit this page for related information.

The foundations laid by former owner Adrian Boothroyd were already excellent, and Gino Pozzo has brought stability to a club that had been in decline for some years. Gino Pozzo’s family has invested millions into their respective football clubs while showing that they also take an active interest in running them.
