The modern Charity: Sightsavers

Founded in 1950 in the UK, Sightsavers main goals are to eradicate all preventable blindness and assist those with impaired vision in developing countries. Recently. its primary focus is to add existing support to current NTD (Neglected tropical diseases)programs already established in Africa. In association with GiveWell funds in 2017, Sightsavers was able to implement more research in relation to deworming in Cameroon. In accordance with W.H.O (world health organization) recommendations, Sightsavers was able to provide technical and financial assistance for governments eager to find a solution to this epidemic.

How does Sightsavers decide which issues to tackle? Africa is a large continent with many countries inside of it. Understandably Sightsavers only chooses causes that have a good chance of meeting their expectations in terms of effectiveness and efficiency. Examples of these requirements are as follows, current funding for the project, the intensity of the disease in the environment the program will be held in, and the feasibility of the program compared to Sightsavers capacity to take the workload.

“What is river blindness?” River blindness is a parasitic infection that can, over time, cause irreversible blindness. The disease is spread by the bite of infected black flies that breed near fast-flowing rivers. 120 million people are at risk worldwide. River blindness can lead to severe skin irritation, pain and sight loss. 500,000 people are blind because of it. 37 million are infected by the disease. Medication can stop it spreading. Fly catchers work to eradicate the flies that carry river blindness. Together, we can eliminate the disease. Once Sightsavers and a country come to terms about where they want to focus their resources on, Sightsavers begins to plan out how they will implement that particular program. Advocacy, surveys, and training are a few examples of how Sightsavers manages these programs. Beginning with its first program located in Nigeria, Sightsavers was able to help in combination with school and community-based MDAs children as young as 5.
